 Did they use morse code in World War II? Did the Germans use morse code to communicate in WWII? Good Morning Arabatics, You sure bring back old memories. Your question: Yes, everybody used Morse Code in WW2. Voice was unclear and could only travel about 20 miles back in the day. Morse Code could travel over 100 miles and even farther using smoke or light at night while at sea. That was the big advantage Morse code had over voice. I will not go into the history of Morse Code. You sound like a sharp young lady. If I may share some of my own history, you may find it very interesting. April 14, 1967: Greeting from the President of the United States. You are hereby ordered to report. I was drafted on May 4. I had basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington for 8 weeks. I qualified for communications school at Fort Ord, California for AIT. There were about one hundred soldiers in the class. I was at Fort Ord for 12 weeks. The top 10% of the class would go to Fort Gordon, Georgia for 20 weeks of advance communications. At Fort Gordon, we studied radio communications for six (6) hours per day. Than we studied and listened to Morse Code for another 4 hours a day and another 2 hours at night. A total of six hours per day listening to Morse Code. There were about 25 soldiers in the class. Some were from other forts. The instructors would remind us all day every day, “If you fail to learn Morse code, you will be carrying a “Prick 25” (web site below) in the jungles of Vietnam. The VC aim for the radio man.” The instructors also repeated over and over and over, “Do not learn the dots and dashes in the code. Learn Morse Code as a rhythm in a musical song.” You had to pass Morse Code by receiving and sending 15 words per minute. Learning Morse Code was a piece of cake. Then we started on 13 words per minute. That code was so fast. It was like listening to Greek or African drums. The drums became louder and louder until they were pounding in your head even after you took off your headsets. I saw guys rip off their headsets after 10 days. We listened to Morse Code day after day in the humid Georgia nights. Your ears would become numb and sweat would pour down your neck from the headphones on your ears. Your brain was like a vegetable after a few hours of listening to code pounding in your ears at high speed. The class was cut in half. No one could pass 13 words per minutes. The instructors would laugh/smile and say, “We told you to learn the rhythm. You people didn’t listen to us.” I saw grown men cry while listening to Morse Code. Every time I thought about quitting, I would depict myself in Vietnam with the mud knee-deep while carrying that Prc-25 radio on my back. The instructors were right. It is impossible to learn Morse code by listening to the dots and dashes. Morse Code is like listening to music. You do not hear the dots and dashes. After 20 weeks eight of us graduated. I could send and receive 24 words per minute. I was a Top Secret Crypto Communications Specialist. I went on to serve as an Intelligence NCO for an elite Assault Helicopter Company deep in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam during Tet 68’. We were part of the 101st Airborne Division. On July 14, 1999, the last military Morse Code message was send to President Bill Clinton, “Please accept this final radio telegraph message as a token of this historic event.” President Clinton did not receive the message in Morse Code. He received the message the next day in the form of an E-mail. It was a sign of the times. The United States military no longer teaches Morse Code. This was the end of era. For 160 years of Morse Code was used by the world. In 2008, the military did accept the (MARS) Military Amateur Radio Service as official Morse Code Operators.
